The road to Mjóifjörður winds steeply through the Icelandic East Fjords — gravel, narrow, and often shrouded in fog. Few ever make it this far. I lived in this region for a year and a half, and every visit to this hidden fjord felt like crossing into another world.

This piece was created around midnight in July, when the fog hung low over the sea and the light never fully faded. A single cabin stood alone on the cliffs — its white façade glowing faintly against the gray, with a few distant lights flickering by the harbor below.

In a world of shortcuts, I hold on to process. Every artwork is individually crafted, every frame joined by hand, every surface protected. This devotion to craft isn’t about excess — it’s about restraint. About knowing when to stop, and letting the materials speak.

Each piece I make begins with stillness — not an absence of sound, but a kind of listening. My artworks, including those in Assouline’s Iceland Epic, are my way of sharing what that silence has to say.

Museum-Level Detail & Depth

Each piece is printed on archival Hahnemühle Photo Rag — a luxurious, thick, 100% cotton matte paper, prized by galleries and collectors for its softly textured surface and museum-level depth.

Combined with archival 12-color Canon Lucia Pro inks, it captures breathtaking sharpness, rich tones, and smooth gradations that bring the scene to life — whether it's a misty Icelandic fjord or a windswept coastal plain.

The result? Museum-level clarity, and a sense of presence so real you’ll want to step into the frame.

FRAMING GUIDE

Custom-Framed in Los Angeles by Master Craftsmen

Handcrafted in Los Angeles

Each frame is custom-built by hand to ensure a flawless, museum-quality finish — crafted in Los Angeles by exceptionally skilled artisans. Their obsessive attention to detail guarantees a perfect fit and enduring quality.

No Veneers. Just Solid Wood

Your artwork deserves lasting integrity — that’s why I use only solid walnut, maple, and pine. Unlike veneer or imitation wood, these natural materials ensure your frame will never warp or degrade over time.

Always Flat. Never Buckled

A buckled print can ruin the impact of great art. That’s why each piece is permanently mounted to a rigid board — so it stays flat, clean, and beautifully tensioned, even in large sizes.

No Mat — The Museum-Standard Look

Every piece is framed without a mat — not by accident, but by design. This clean, contemporary approach is the museum standard for large-scale fine art photography.

Instead of a mat, I use custom-made white spacers — a refined detail that gives the artwork space to breathe and keeps all attention on the image. These spacers create an elegant air gap between the artwork and the acrylic, protecting it from sticking, moisture, and mold over time.

The result? A premium, gallery-style presentation that looks timeless, modern, and beautifully intentional — at any size.

Many collectors who were used to traditional matting have told me they love the clean, modern feel of this approach — and now prefer it.

However, if you strongly prefer a traditional mat, I’ll be happy to offer a custom option — just email me at adam@adambiernatstudio.com

Crystal-Clear Acrylic Protection

Enjoy crystal-clear viewing and serious protection. I use thick, framing-grade acrylic that filters 85% of UV light — completely flat and resilient, unlike the flimsy plastic found in mass-market frames.

Sealed Tight. Stays Clean Inside

To preserve your investment long term, a durable dust cover is sealed to the back of every frame — keeping the interior pristine for years to come.

Built-In Hanging Confidence

Each frame comes ready to hang, with premium hardware attached (corner hangers or a cleat for larger works). It’s solid, safe, and designed for effortless display from day one.

“The frame quality blew me away! Solid, sleek, and built to last.” – Peter F.

How I created this artwork

Reaching Mjóifjörður always felt like entering another realm. The road twists down from the mountains in endless curves, half gravel, half mist, clinging to the cliffs as it descends toward the sea. By winter, it’s closed to the world. In summer, it’s barely open — a thread of a road leading to silence.

That night, I camped by the water below this cabin, in a narrow strip of grass between the mountains and the fjord. The air smelled faintly of salt and wet earth. Though it was July, the cold crept in as midnight approached. The fog thickened, wrapping everything in quiet.

I climbed up the hill toward the cabin, guided not by darkness but by the dim, endless light of the Icelandic summer. The world had reduced itself to shades of gray — sea, land, sky, all dissolving into one another. Only the faint lights from the harbor flickered far below.

And then I saw it — this small white cabin standing alone against the mist, its paint worn by decades of storms, its window boarded shut. It looked almost weightless, like a memory suspended between sea and sky. I set up my tripod and waited, letting the fog breathe around it.

When I released the shutter, the moment felt like a whisper — brief, fragile, and infinite at once.

Even now, when I look at this piece, I can still feel the damp chill of that air and hear the faint lapping of the tide below. It reminds me that the quietest places often speak the loudest — if you stay long enough to listen.
