I remember standing before the black church in Búðir, on Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, as the wind fell quiet — just the faint hum of the sea beyond the lava fields. The light was dim, the clouds heavy, yet the scene felt weightless, suspended in time.

The Black Church of Búðir speaks of solitude and faith — a reminder that silence can be powerful.

Its dark silhouette rises quietly against the vast, moody landscape — simple, yet deeply meditative. I was drawn to its purity, to how it embodies both strength and stillness in the heart of nature. The low clouds stretch endlessly above, offering space for thought and breath.

This piece became one of my most personal works — and one that continues to resonate with collectors around the world.

All artworks are created by me — Adam Biernat, an award-winning fine art photographer. I’ve spent the last decade chasing stillness across Iceland’s most remote corners.

ASSOULINE published my work in Iceland Epic — a globally renowned collector’s book.

The packaging is eco-friendly too. I care deeply about our fragile planet — and I want the landscapes I photograph to remain as wild and pristine as they are today. Nearly all of my materials are plastic-free and fully recyclable.

No Veneers. Just Solid Wood

Your artwork deserves lasting integrity — that’s why I use only solid walnut, maple, and pine. Unlike veneer or imitation wood, these natural materials ensure your frame will never warp or degrade over time.

Always Flat. Never Buckled

A buckled print can ruin the impact of great art. That’s why each piece is permanently mounted to a rigid board — so it stays flat, clean, and beautifully tensioned, even in large sizes.

No Mat — The Museum-Standard Look

Every piece is framed without a mat — not by accident, but by design. This clean, contemporary approach is the museum standard for large-scale fine art photography.

Instead of a mat, I use custom-made white spacers — a refined detail that gives the artwork space to breathe and keeps all attention on the image. These spacers create an elegant air gap between the artwork and the acrylic, protecting it from sticking, moisture, and mold over time.

The result? A premium, gallery-style presentation that looks timeless, modern, and beautifully intentional — at any size.

Many collectors who were used to traditional matting have told me they love the clean, modern feel of this approach — and now prefer it.

The story behind this piece

There are places in Iceland that stay with you long after you’ve left. Búðir is one of them.

The first time I stood before The Black Church of Búðir, I felt an immediate sense of quiet. The clouds hung low over the mountains, stretching across the sky like an echo of the black wooden walls.

The church itself stood alone, a dark silhouette against the vast Icelandic landscape — both humble and powerful, simple yet profound.

As I framed my shot, the door to the church suddenly creaked open. Just for a moment. It was as if the scene was inviting me in — not just into the building, but into a deeper stillness, a moment of pause in an otherwise rushing world.

That’s the feeling this artwork holds.
