The story behind this piece

It was late October, deep in Iceland’s Westfjords — miles from anyone, at the end of a winding dirt road most travelers never see.

The night was still. Silent. Star-filled.
I set up my tent near a tiny church on a hill — a lone roof against the dark.

The forecast promised nothing.
No surprises.
Just cold air and quiet.

But then, around midnight…
something woke me.

I unzipped the tent — half-asleep, half-frozen — and what I saw above that little church made my heart stop.

A pulse of green light stretched across the sky.
Then another.
And suddenly, the darkness erupted into movement.
Color.
Life.

The aurora didn’t drift quietly — it danced. Wild, vivid, and impossibly alive.

Waves of green swept overhead, folding and twisting into shapes that felt like the sky itself was breathing. The humble church below glowed in silent awe, its white walls reflecting the magic above — as if it had been waiting for this exact night.

For a moment, the world froze. The only thing that moved was the sky.

My hands shook as I reached for my tripod. Every second brought a new shape, a new surge of color, a new wonder I feared would vanish before I could truly take it in. I pressed the shutter — breathless — trying to hold onto the impossible.
