How I created this artwork

It was early September, the day before my ferry was due to leave from Seyðisfjörður. I had spent six months living in a small wooden house by the fjord in Siglufjörður — months marked by silence, snowmelt, and the slow rhythm of the northern light. The days had begun to shorten, and the air carried that first hint of winter.

Crossing the highlands toward the east, I woke to find the land transformed. Overnight, the first snow of the season had fallen — soft, delicate, and absolute. The brown earth and moss were veiled in white, and the mountains, which I’d known all summer in shades of grey and green, had become something else entirely: still, sculptural, and infinitely distant.

I stopped often, unable to drive past what felt like the first page of a new season. The landscape was almost silent — only the faint hiss of wind over snow, and the occasional call of a raven somewhere far off. The air was so clear that even the smallest rise in the terrain seemed to hold its own gravity.

When I reached Múlathing, the light had flattened into that quiet, silver tone that always precedes a storm. I set up my tripod and watched the snow drift across the plain — a slow, weightless movement that seemed to erase time. The world felt pared down to its essentials: shape, texture, breath.

Looking at “Endless Wilderness” now, I see more than a landscape. I see the calm that comes after a long season of storms, and the subtle melancholy of leaving a place that has already begun to change without you.
