The story behind this piece

I met Ástríkur while living with a farming family at the foot of Eyjafjallajökull — the volcano that, only a few years earlier, had sent ash across Europe. For seven months, I shared life at Thorvaldseyri — waking to the sound of cattle, helping in the family’s visitor center, and watching the light shift across the mountains through long, slow days.

Sometimes I’d walk down the gravel path to my neighbors at Núpakot. Their horses often grazed near the edge of the field, their silhouettes softened by fog. One morning, I saw Ástríkur — pale, calm, and curious, his breath visible in the cold air. He came closer without hesitation, as if sensing I wasn’t there to disturb but to listen.

There’s something remarkable about Icelandic horses — they carry both strength and stillness in equal measure. They’ve endured storms, volcanic ash, and isolation for centuries, yet they remain gentle, grounded, and unafraid. Ástríkur embodied that spirit. Photographing him felt less like taking a picture and more like sharing a moment of understanding — the kind that needs no words.

Life at Thorvaldseyri taught me that resilience doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it’s quiet — found in people who rebuild, in animals that endure, and in landscapes that slowly breathe again beneath the weight of ash.
