How I created this artwork

The storm came without warning. One moment the sky was a dull gray curtain; the next, it folded in on itself and began to snow — thick, heavy flakes that blurred the edges of the world. I had been driving for hours, tracing the narrow road that winds from Egilsstaðir to Seyðisfjörður, that last descent toward the sea before leaving Iceland behind.

My ferry back to mainland Europe was leaving that evening. Seven months of silence, wind, and vastness were drawing to a close — and though I was ready to go, part of me resisted the idea of departure, as if the island itself were holding me for just a little longer.

As the pass climbed higher, the storm deepened. The road disappeared beneath drifts of snow; visibility fell to almost nothing. I slowed to a crawl, headlights catching only the nearest swirls of white. It felt as if I were driving through nothingness — suspended between sky and earth.

Then, just before the descent began, the storm broke open. For a brief instant, the wind stilled. The clouds lifted enough for me to glimpse this solitary peak — half-shrouded, half-revealed — rising from the haze like a memory surfacing through fog. It felt like Iceland itself was exhaling, showing me one last secret before letting me go.

I stopped the car, stepped out into the silence, and felt the air bite my skin. Everything was muted: the world reduced to wind, snow, and the faint crunch beneath my boots. I raised the camera, breath clouding the viewfinder, and pressed the shutter once. The moment vanished as quickly as it had come — swallowed again by snow.

That single frame became “Above Seyðisfjörður”.

Looking at it now, I see more than a mountain. I see the quiet reckoning of leaving — that bittersweet stillness between belonging and departure. For me, this photograph is a threshold: the point where Iceland’s vast solitude began to echo inside me, long after I’d left its shores.
